My Chair-ish Thoughts.

Today I thought it might be fun to drop a few “Fact Findings, from behind our Chairs”. If you think you know everything there is to know about your hair, you just might want to re-think that. If you’re like many, you may know how to style it or maybe what length that looks or feels best on you, but there’s a lot of weird stuff going on up there that we rarely give a second thought too. Here are a few interesting fun hair facts may just blow your mind, or at least make you rethink the extent of your hair knowledge.

  • On average, you shed around 50-150 strands of hair a day. Yes, now you know what’s been clogging your shower drain.
  • Hair is  the second fastest growing tissue in the body after bone marrow. Lets just say thank goodness for that. If you’ve ever had a bad haircut.
  • A healthy strand of hair can stretch an additional 30% when it’s wet. So don’t pull it while brushing it wet, for all that is holy!
  • Hair grows slightly faster in warm weather, because heat stimulates circulation and encourages hair growth. “Beach Time Maybe?”
  •  The only thing about you that can’t be identified by your hair is your gender—men’s hair and women’s hair are identical in structure. I think I might be watching to much NCIS.
  • The scientific term for split ends is “trichoptilosis.” Yeah, I had to look that up!
  • Eighty percent of Americans wash their hair twice a day. Geez people haven’t you ever heard of Dry Shampoo!
  •  A single hair has a lifespan of about five years.
  • Trying to grow out your hair? It takes about 7 years to grow it to your waist, and 3 years to grow it to your shoulders!
  • All of the hair follicles in the human body are formed by the time we are just five months old in the womb. Apparently, one more thing to blame on mom!

So till next time,

A change is in the Air!

It’s a cold day, nearing the end of January in good old San Antonio Texas. I grab my purse and my warm elixir of life, coffee, and jump into my car feeling the cold leather against my thighs and back. Instantly I reach for the seat warmer and adjust my air settings. Those of you living in San Antonio know we experience 39 and 70 degrees in one day and I had my A/C blasting from the ride home from work yesterday.

I feel the warm air hitting my shoulders and face feeling my hairs stand up on end as I shiver with relief. Coming to my first stop light, I look up into my rear-view mirror and see my reflection staring back at me. After the initial shock, of seeing the hair standing up clinging to the roof of my car because of static, I noticed the dry chapped lips, tight crêpey skin, and my hands looked like the crypt keeper grasping my steering wheel.

Time to look at my beauty regime and adjust to the season.

In this cooler season we need to protect, our first layer of defense our skin. We need to intake more water to compensate for the cooler fronts causing dry air outside and forced hot air heating inside causing moisture to evaporate from the surface of the skin. Here are some of my tips that I incorporate to negate the dehydration and dryness in my skin and hair in our cooler months.

Because its cooler I tend to drink more coffee and tea. These come with a price, more dehydration. I generally stick to the rule of thumb to take in two eight-ounce glasses of water to every caffeinated or alcoholic beverage I consume as both are diuretics and will make you dehydrate more quickly.

My routine is all Aveda and so I just adjust accordingly.

First changing out my cleanser. Instead of using the Botanical Kinetics Gel Cleanser, I would use our Botanical Kinetics Crème Cleanser, which is gentler, cleansing the skin with plant derived oils leaving the skin soft and smooth and not stripped.

My usual moisturizer is Botanical Kinetics Hydrating Lotion, which I would change up for the thicker, and more moisturizing Botanical Kinetics Hydrating Rich Crème or Soft Crème if I needed a lighter version. This would add a barrier layer protecting my skin from the elements and helping the water in my skin from evaporating which in turn would leave it dehydrated.

I also change up my shampoo routine. While still using my Aveda Color Conserve Shampoo, I would swap out my conditioner to the Aveda Dry Remedy Conditioner. This helps add and maintain moisture balance in the hair, relieving you of the static with the Buriti Oil and the gentle aroma of organic lavender, bergamot and ginger lily and other pure flower and plant essences

Finally, I will pull from my purse, because I always carry it with me, my Hand Relief Lotion. It is full of anti-oxidants vitamins A and E, lactic acid which exfoliates and licorice root for lightning and brightening, which is a must for aging skin. Our hands and neck show our age first ladies!

Until we get back our regular eight months of 85 to 100 this will be my winter and spring routine.

Join me in changing it up and come visit us at The Day Spa @ Folawns for some pampering. YOU deserve it!

Signing out, till the next time yours in Service

Abundance with Aveda & The Day Spa @ Folawns

Category: Motivational wellness

How can we create and maintain abundance and motivational wellness with massage in 2019?

Let’s face it: we often mistake abundance for the money-making career aspects of our lives and consider ourselves healthy and well only if we see no illness in our bodies. The holiday season can leave you feeling mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausted and not so focused on those New Year’s resolutions of abundance or wellness. Pain and discomfort are great motivators for wellness, showing you how you didn’t remember to “pay yourself first”. The solution? A small change in perspective: everything in nature happens in its own time, at a much slower pace. If “time is money”, it makes sense to slow down and spend time and money on yourself, through your five senses, as you are meant to experience life. Every moment of wellness can motivate you to build a lifetime of abundance with small changes.

Creating and maintaining abundance and motivational wellness the Folawns way keeps it simple: experiencing yourself through your five senses helps achieve abundant health and wellness using natural aromatic oils to enhance massage sessions. After all, Aveda’s founder, Horst Rechelbacher, once said, “Plants are the best chemists.” As the son of an herbalist and his time spent as an aromatherapist (among many other hats and titles), Rechelbacher understood the gateway between mind and body is the air we breathe and the way to soothe mind and body is via aromatic oils made from Aveda’s pure plant essences. When the mind and body reconnect, you are better able to recognize abundance from the inside out. Each deep, full breath into the body’s tight areas can help you face life’s challenges with effective solutions.

A Folawns massage experience meets all 5 senses depending on which massage style and/or add-on you book:

  1. Chakra Balance massage: for those who are curious about the 7 main chakras*, guided meditations, and love the lighter touch of Swedish massage + any of the 7 chakra blends. *Chakras come from Aveda’s deep roots in Ayurveda, India’s philosophy of preventive health and mind-body wellness.
  2. Hot Stone Fusion massage: for those who just love hot stones**, stones may be placed or actively moved to coax muscles back into their original, relaxed form. **Stones are cooled down to a guest-friendly temperature of their choosing.
  3. Stress Fix massage: for deep tissue warriors who need a focus on back, neck and shoulders and love medium to firm pressure. Lavender lovers will enjoy the Stress Fix blend of lavender, lavandin and clary sage.
  4. Add-ons/session enhancement(s): Cupping therapy, hydrating therapy for body and feet, invigorating scalp treatment, reflexology foot massage.
  5. What to expect: soothing visual space, relaxing spa music, a cup of Aveda’s Comforting Tea or another beverage of your choice, and aromatherapy in addition to your chosen style of touch therapy as listed above.

After massage services, guests typically experience feeling more rejuvenated, centered and renewed through improved circulation and range of motion and nights of enhanced sleep. To see which type of massage can be customized to your wellness needs, please call the Day Spa @ Folawns at 210-408-0101. We look forward to helping you find and maintain the experience of a more abundant you!

The basics of eye makeup application begin with determining the shape of your eyes.
Finding a make-up technique that works for you and as important as choosing the right colors for your coloring. Becoming more comfortable with the line of your face will allow you to determine the best make up application and colors for you

The beautiful Earth Month 2013 Aveda’s

The beautiful Earth Month 2013 campaign artwork tells the story of just one village, the village of Ampasimanjeva, Madagascar and what clean water means to them. The illustrations were drawn by children of the village showing the happiness clean water projects have brought to their lives. We think it’s beautiful and hope you do, too.

What are natural hair make-up brushes ?

Here’s Why…601373_541773619176337_129323303_n

What are natural hair make-up brushes ?

Brushes that are made of natural hair contain many tiny spaces in them when seen microscopically . Hence when you use them they pick up a lot more pigments.

Tips for maintaining these must have brushes —-

– do not blow into the brush bristles and distort its shape to remove excess makeup.Instead, tap the brush against your hand or on a tissue .
This keeps the brush in shape for longer .

While cleaning the brush never rub the bristles instead rinse with running water in the direction of the bristles .

Never soak the entire brush because the wood and the adhesive that holds the bristles and the shaft together can dissolve.

After cleaning also remember to sculpt the bristles into the original shape before it dries.
