Shine on…

Mobile_HairColor

Getting ready for beach season we are prepping our body’s and skin with detoxes, body polishes and tanning. Not forgetting our luscious locks, everyone also wants to lighten up their hair and put a kiss of highlights or maybe go up a shade or two. Let’s face it ladies our Tans just look better.
One of the down sides though with the lighter shades and the high lifting is that we don’t have the shine that comes with your darker riche hair color, because the cuticle tends to more lifted and less smooth.
Imagine your favorite red nail polish with no top coat, sad!!!! But if we pop a clear high gloss on it Wowza! It Adds depth and dimension through the shine.
Aveda have come up with a fab Shine treatment that will enhance the preexisting color by allowing it to reflect and refract light off the shaft of the hair by adding this clear coat. This also only takes an extra 5 mins at the bowl after the shampoo and before the conditioner .It seals down the cuticle and improves the appearance of the hair condition lasting up to 20 shampoos giving a beautiful shine. As with all of Aveda product it is 93 % naturally derived from plants and non-petroleum minerals and water.
Getting summer ready?
Come shine on with the Family here at Folawns and add this to your next haircut.

Till next time.

Get grounded in Abundance with Aveda & The Day Spa at Folawns

0f264bb1e3468510583793e5960249ba

When was the last time your name hit #1 on your to-do list? There are definitely apps for that, but let’s get more personal: the app you were born in, your body, is the best reminder of prioritizing self-care. How? Pain and chronic stress, the duo which leaves you feeling run down and not-so abundant. Oh and the well-intended New Year’s resolution? It fell into a slump after Valentine’s Day. Getting grounded is not easy in today’s world of fast-paced, technologically forward, land of instant gratification, but it IS possible, especially through the five senses.
At Folawn’s living Ayurveda through Aveda means following the Earth’s five elements (Ether/Space, Air, Fire, Water, Earth) through the year’s seasons. Grounding yourself through the elements and senses from Winter into Spring requires activating your sense of smell. Our sense of smell is associated with creating some of our earliest memories. Please accept this invitation to create a new memory at Folawn’s as you rejuvenate, relax and energize yourself with the following solutions:

• Got 5 minutes? Take a sensory journey with our heritage aroma families: Rosemary Mint, Shampure or Cherry Almond. Add any heritage aroma to our Hand Relief and/or Foot Relief and enjoy moisturizing bliss, even if only for a few moments.
• 15 minutes left on lunch? Come in for a 15-minute chair massage. Take Folawn’s with you in a personalized Pure-fume aromatherapy essence for just $20.
• Only have 30 minutes? Instead of cancelling your 90-minute massage, choose a different date for massage and come in for a foot reflexology treatment.
• Need to exfoliate and rehydrate? Schedule our exfoliating and intensive hydrating body treatments* once every 8 weeks.
• Got cold and flu or allergy symptoms? Massage achy body parts at home with our Stress Fix, Rosemary Mint and Cooling composition oils. Recipe: In 1 oz. of carrier oil or lotion, put 10-20 drops of each essential oil. Do not put essential oils directly onto the skin. Please use a carrier oil/lotion.

*Service times vary by treatment
Instead of flirting with dis-ease and disaster, dial it down a notch (or five) and take 5 slow, deep, abundant breaths. Your body and mind need and want abundant, conscious attention. Your breath is the map, just follow it at a slow, relaxed pace. Prioritize yourself and make it your to-“be” list. In fact, just like on my massage table, your only job is to breathe: just do it with full awareness for at least 2 minutes. How abundant the rest of your day is will be up to you.

Double Cleansing

Double Cleansing: You need to do this, twice!

Every relationship goes through it’s chapters and reaches it’s most meaningful milestones. First dates, first kiss, meeting the parents, first true argument about how, “Oh I don’t care,” is actually not a restaurant. But to this day, I remember the first time my beau ventured into the bathroom of my apartment searching for q-tips. {It might have also been dental floss or tissues. I might not remember this as clearly as I thought. But the humor is still here I promise.} I knew the moment he opened up those upper cabinet doors, searching earnestly for his needs and seeing for the first time my arsenal of beauty products and tools I utilize in my efforts to age gracefully. Now for me, I can practically hear a choir of angels sing every time I open those doors. Glycolic Cleansers, Retinol Crèmes, and oh the lipid soluble vitamin C serums. It’s beautiful. For him, bewildered, confusion, questioning life decisions he made in the third grade. In this moment, he let out the most innocent of, “Whoa,” that would have made a circa 1989 Keanu Reaves very proud. And with a giggle he said that he thought washing his face was just soap and water. Oh he was so mistaken, but he was also so very correct in the simplicity of our skins needs.

As a whole, the beauty industry today is in this amazing era where the education about the importance of a good skin care routine is pivotal. We know that our skin is the largest organ our body has, and it works very hard every day to protect us from harmful environmental factors. The better we take care of our skin, this beautiful organ can do its job longer and more efficiently. With this knowledge, our industry has blossomed with an array of products and tools that aide in our skin care routines. Clarisonic brushes, charcoal masks and jade rollers are everyday tools, while our cabinets are lined with toners and serums for every need. But in reality, we often overlook the fact that a good face cleanse, specifically a double cleanse, is the most important step we can take. Double cleansing is a method of washing your face twice. Yep, that simple. But without proper cleansing, every other step in your skin care routine is absolutely pointless.

Double cleansing really started to receive attention when the layered steps of the Korean skincare routines gained popularity. The art of double cleansing is that you first wash your face with an oil based cleanser. For most of us the mental alarms are already going off at the idea of washing our face with an oil, surely this will make me more oily and further my breakouts? But oil attracts oil, and in this case it’s really attracted to the fat deep in your subcutaneous tissue. The oil cleanse will get down deep in those pores to melt sebum and break down makeup, dirt and pollutants that have accumulated. Often times a deep cleansing will leave the skin dry and raw, but because the oil based cleanser doesn’t mess with the lipids and ceramides between the skin cells, your skin will be balanced, clean and hydrated. The second phase of the double cleanse is the use of a water based foaming cleanser. While the oil based products worked to break down all the crud in our skin, one to two pumps out of this foaming bottle of wonderful is going to swoop in to wash away all of that surface residue. You will be clean. You will be purified. And you will be ready for serums.

Now if you know me at all, you know I am a lazy girl at heart. I often joke that if I can’t put on my makeup at two red lights, well then I just don’t need that kind of pressure in my life. I promise you my skin care routine is not anymore taxing. Following the double cleansing method should -maybe- add one to two more minutes in front of your bathroom mirror at night. That’s it. But from acne to ageing, this two step routine may be your skin’s saving grace.

Just Remember:

Step One: Apply an oil based cleanser to neck and face. Moving in upward and outward circles to massage the cleanser in. You’ll look like a raccoon who forgot their umbrella. This is good, this means the oil is melting everything down. Remove with warm water and cloths.

Step Two: One to Two pumps of your water based foaming cleanser. Work into neck, jaw and entire face with your finger tips for about one minute. Rinse thoroughly.

Your skin will be completely ready now for any toners, serums and bottled glow your favorite Esthetician has recommended for you. Try to do this every night, or most nights if were being honest gals. Until next time readers.

The Big Bang Theory

file

I hear it all the time these days especially with all the celebs taking the plunge and getting bangs. “Do you think I could rock Bangs? “
Well ladies, here are the basic concerns, questions and answers that we should ask ourselves before we reach for the scissors. Oh, and I know you do!
1. Let a professional do it!
It may look easy, but it is not and its front and center. There is no hiding a mistake.
2. Not every bang is for everyone. The shape of your face determines what style of bang would look most flattering.

* A round or heart shaped face can look good with a very hard angular straight bang because it balances out the other round features.

* A square face shape should avoid a straight line and go with a wispy curtain fringe that is longer at the temple area and you could even sweep it off to the side.

* An Oval shaped face can pretty much pull anything off.
3. The rule of thumb is that wherever the length of the bang ends, that is the feature that you emphasize

So, for instance, the long heavy curtain bang is going to high light your cheek bones or nose, but the bangs that skim the brow will highlight the eyes. If you want to highlight great brows or a fantastic pair of eyes or frames you will want to go with a baby bang.
Flattering bangs should frame and highlight your most positive features and not overwhelm the face.
4. Questions every girl should ask themselves before they make the commitment.
* Do I mind hair in my face?

• * Will I be able to make time for regular trims?

* Will I be willing to style my bangs every day?

* Do I wear glasses? This will affect how the bang will lay.

* Make sure you understand the level of commitment if you have highly textured hair or a cow lick that will have to be addressed daily.

With all this taken into consideration, they are a fun way to add sass to an old cut, often giving the allusion of youth or length to your hair. Highlighting your best features and hiding your worst. If you have never taken the plunge give it a whirl, it could be the change that you needed. Come and see us at The Day Spa @ Folawns. We will bang you right into shape!

Motivational Wellness: Founder’s Example of Finding Flow

woman-lying-down-at-spa

Do you remember the first thought or thing you did when you woke up this morning? Be honest…you probably don’t and that’s okay. We typically shoot ourselves out of canons, a million thoughts about to-do lists and other thoughts connected to obligations which start with the words “should”, “have to” and “can’t” or “don’t” attached. No shame, but honestly, between the thoughts and the doing, we forget how to just BE. How do we do that? Just breathe consciously. In the simplest form of the word, inspiration = breath.

“It’s important to let go, calm down, and get grounded. We need to listen to ourselves. When one becomes aware that our present-moment thoughts are not productive, one should simply let them go. Change a negative thought to a positive one.” ~Aveda founder Horst Rechelbacher (1941-2014)

I didn’t have the gift of knowing Horst Rechelbacher personally, yet his passion for plants and care of the environment has always been phenomenal to me. An immigrant son of an Austrian herbalist and shoemaker, his love of nature became a vocation to teach and transform the beauty industry’s impenetrable, impersonal facade from the inside out: as a hairstylist, yoga and meditation student, environmentalist, entrepreneur and genius philosopher in my humble opinion, his impact reached far and wide.

Horst walked his walk and did not let a near fatal car accident in his 20’s alter the course of his vision. He had to heal physically and be patient within a healing timeline not in his control and it had everything to do with an abundant mindset as illustrated above. Decades before “sustainability” became trendy, every breath he took was in a foundation of deeply passionate self-love and respect for himself, others and the planet. Horst’s loving integrity and an uncompromising vision reminds us that laser-sharp thought process is what your self-love demands of you in each moment of your day: that what you think, how you feel about it, how you talk about it and how you act upon it can transform your world from negative to positive. Just BE, just flow for now, one moment at a time.

For an Aveda experience at Folawn’s to really do that, you have to surrender and trust yourself, which is the foundation of self-love. Our founder’s example set the tone: It’s never just a haircut, a nail appointment, a facial, or a massage. Try thinking about your aches, pains and negative experiences as a little kid that needs your immediate attention. The reality is our best selves show up when we pay attention to our challenges, thinking and feeling positive and allowing our friends to help us. Paying attention to ourselves and feeling loved is the true transformational currency of abundance. Please allow Folawn’s and Aveda to help you find the abundance you may have overlooked. February’s flow of self-love can be found in transforming the negative lead into positive gold. It really CAN be that simple.

3 Things you can do to improve your natural texture

curl_pattern

I hear it a lot- especially as a hair stylist with curly hair, “My hair has natural wave/curl, but I don’t like to wear it natural because it isn’t pretty or uniform!” I’m willing to bet that your natural texture can be pretty with a few simple changes to your routine.
First and foremost, you must adjust the way you view it. Your wave pattern is a lot less set in stone than you think. Consider hair texture as a spectrum ranging from stick- straight to kinky curly, with several degrees of wavy in between. It can feel overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it these few tricks for encouraging curl (or increase wave) can allow you to take advantage of your built-in style and save a lot of time by avoiding blow-drying, curling, and flat ironing. Starting with…
1. Give it moisture
Curly/wavy hair tends to feel dryer than straight hair simply because it is harder for the natural oils from your scalp to navigate the turns in the hair shaft. To compensate, make sure you are using a good quality moisturizing shampoo and conditioner (Aveda Dry Remedy is my BFF). Also, consider stretching out the time between your shampoos to give your scalp a chance to provide some of its own conditioner. Something like every three days or twice a week is ideal, but I prefer to shampoo based on the way my hair looks and feels. Sometimes after the gym I will simply rinse and condition to remove the ickiness without stripping it on day two. A super moisturizing mask once a week or every other is ideal for long or colored curly hair. If you find yourself frustrated with frizzy curls, it may be time to add a moisturizing product (like my favorite: Aveda Universal Styling Crème) to give it the moisture it’s reaching out for.

2. Be gentle!
If you’re feeling fluffy, frizzy, or poofy you are probably over brushing your hair. The more you mess with your hair the less like individual curls and more like one giant, fluffy mass it becomes. Instead try detangling with a big, wide-toothed comb in the shower once you have applied your conditioner. Start from the ends and work your way up to undo any tangles. Never scrub your hair side-to-side and avoid roughing it up with a towel. Instead, try drying your hair by wrapping it in an old cotton t-shirt. The cotton is gentler than terry cloth and does not pull the hair like the weight of a full-sized towel. Avoid breakage (and thus frizz) by avoiding the temptation to put your hair up in a bun or pony tail while it’s still wet and consider replacing your elastics with bobbles, scrunchies, and spin pins which put less tension on the hair.

3. Experiment with product combinations
The final step in styling with natural texture is to scrunch in your styling products. Once your hair is damp but not dripping thanks to t-shirt wrapping simply apply your product(s) to the palms of your hands, tilt your head upside down and lift the ends of the hair up towards your scalp. Give it a good squeeze, so that you are gathering it in a fist, and then drop. Continue this process all over your head until everything is scrunched, and most of the product has been absorbed. Resist the urge to break up the curl by running your fingers through it, pulling it, or combing in any way. You can continue to scrunch as it dries, but that’s really it!
Here’s the trick: the perfect combination of products for beautiful, shiny, frizz free locks is totally personal to the individual. Generally, wavy and curly hair works best with a product for moisture (creams, oils, and serums) and a product for hold (gels, foams, and hairsprays). You might throw in a third for humidity, but 2-3 leave in products is best. Try different kinds in different combinations to see what you like, and more importantly, what your hair likes. My personal favorite combo for my dry, fine, curly hair is about a quarter-sized amount of Aveda Universal Styling Crème (for moisture) scrunched in damp hair with a layer of Aveda Damage Control spray (for crunch free hold).

Drop a comment below and let us know your favorite combos or any tricks you like to use for rocking your natural texture!

My Chair-ish Thoughts.

Today I thought it might be fun to drop a few “Fact Findings, from behind our Chairs”. If you think you know everything there is to know about your hair, you just might want to re-think that. If you’re like many, you may know how to style it or maybe what length that looks or feels best on you, but there’s a lot of weird stuff going on up there that we rarely give a second thought too. Here are a few interesting fun hair facts may just blow your mind, or at least make you rethink the extent of your hair knowledge.

  • On average, you shed around 50-150 strands of hair a day. Yes, now you know what’s been clogging your shower drain.
  • Hair is  the second fastest growing tissue in the body after bone marrow. Lets just say thank goodness for that. If you’ve ever had a bad haircut.
  • A healthy strand of hair can stretch an additional 30% when it’s wet. So don’t pull it while brushing it wet, for all that is holy!
  • Hair grows slightly faster in warm weather, because heat stimulates circulation and encourages hair growth. “Beach Time Maybe?”
  •  The only thing about you that can’t be identified by your hair is your gender—men’s hair and women’s hair are identical in structure. I think I might be watching to much NCIS.
  • The scientific term for split ends is “trichoptilosis.” Yeah, I had to look that up!
  • Eighty percent of Americans wash their hair twice a day. Geez people haven’t you ever heard of Dry Shampoo!
  •  A single hair has a lifespan of about five years.
  • Trying to grow out your hair? It takes about 7 years to grow it to your waist, and 3 years to grow it to your shoulders!
  • All of the hair follicles in the human body are formed by the time we are just five months old in the womb. Apparently, one more thing to blame on mom!

So till next time,

Microcurrent: The Natural Facelift

The day I turned thirty, I woke up excited in my hotel room with the promise of a French 75 and the cajun breakfast that was awaiting me as I was celebrating my most illustrious birthday in the Big Easy. Favorite cleanser in hand I gazed into the fluorescent lit bathroom mirror ready to primp myself for the day’s festivities. And then I saw it, like a sci fi monster creeping out of the depths, it was smile lines. Those starkly defined and painfully dreaded wrinkles that were etched around my nose and mouth.

  1. Was. Devastated.

Had I smiled to much in my thirty years? Surely I drank enough water. Exfoliation? It had to be exfoliation. Time to scrub my face like I never had before.

But the simple fact is, the human face is constructed of 45 muscles, 36 of which are used for expression alone. And unlike anywhere else on the body, those muscles directly relate to the appearance of our skin. Right at the tender age of 30, our muscle function begins to atrophy. As this deterioration begins to occur, we simultaneously lose collagen and elastin in our skin.  Science calls this, “Sarcopenia.” I call it, “Gravity is making my face melt and it’s not fair.” I refused to let my cheeks go down without a fight, so what’s a girl to do? Microcurrent my darling.

Microcurrent is a rejuvenating, low-level electrotherapy facial. Two prongs are used by an Esthetician to strategically strengthen the facial muscles, reeducating them into a sculpted and visibly tighter position. It’s Pilates for your face. During the facial, you’ll experience the tingling sensation of small electrical impulses. These impulses mimic those naturally occurring in our body. Aside from the improvement in muscle tone, microcurrent therapy triggers a boost in the body’s production of collagen and elastin. Those precious youthful proteins.

Immediately after the facial, the results are visible. The face is lifted, firm and beautifully hydrated. Treatment is typically done over several sessions, comparable to our gym routines for the rest of our body. Microcurrent is completely safe and FDA approved, however for some clients it’s not the best option.  I wouldn’t recommend this treatment for any of my pregnant guest, people with heart conditions or epilepsy.

A change is in the Air!

It’s a cold day, nearing the end of January in good old San Antonio Texas. I grab my purse and my warm elixir of life, coffee, and jump into my car feeling the cold leather against my thighs and back. Instantly I reach for the seat warmer and adjust my air settings. Those of you living in San Antonio know we experience 39 and 70 degrees in one day and I had my A/C blasting from the ride home from work yesterday.

I feel the warm air hitting my shoulders and face feeling my hairs stand up on end as I shiver with relief. Coming to my first stop light, I look up into my rear-view mirror and see my reflection staring back at me. After the initial shock, of seeing the hair standing up clinging to the roof of my car because of static, I noticed the dry chapped lips, tight crêpey skin, and my hands looked like the crypt keeper grasping my steering wheel.

Time to look at my beauty regime and adjust to the season.

In this cooler season we need to protect, our first layer of defense our skin. We need to intake more water to compensate for the cooler fronts causing dry air outside and forced hot air heating inside causing moisture to evaporate from the surface of the skin. Here are some of my tips that I incorporate to negate the dehydration and dryness in my skin and hair in our cooler months.

Because its cooler I tend to drink more coffee and tea. These come with a price, more dehydration. I generally stick to the rule of thumb to take in two eight-ounce glasses of water to every caffeinated or alcoholic beverage I consume as both are diuretics and will make you dehydrate more quickly.

My routine is all Aveda and so I just adjust accordingly.

First changing out my cleanser. Instead of using the Botanical Kinetics Gel Cleanser, I would use our Botanical Kinetics Crème Cleanser, which is gentler, cleansing the skin with plant derived oils leaving the skin soft and smooth and not stripped.

My usual moisturizer is Botanical Kinetics Hydrating Lotion, which I would change up for the thicker, and more moisturizing Botanical Kinetics Hydrating Rich Crème or Soft Crème if I needed a lighter version. This would add a barrier layer protecting my skin from the elements and helping the water in my skin from evaporating which in turn would leave it dehydrated.

I also change up my shampoo routine. While still using my Aveda Color Conserve Shampoo, I would swap out my conditioner to the Aveda Dry Remedy Conditioner. This helps add and maintain moisture balance in the hair, relieving you of the static with the Buriti Oil and the gentle aroma of organic lavender, bergamot and ginger lily and other pure flower and plant essences

Finally, I will pull from my purse, because I always carry it with me, my Hand Relief Lotion. It is full of anti-oxidants vitamins A and E, lactic acid which exfoliates and licorice root for lightning and brightening, which is a must for aging skin. Our hands and neck show our age first ladies!

Until we get back our regular eight months of 85 to 100 this will be my winter and spring routine.

Join me in changing it up and come visit us at The Day Spa @ Folawns for some pampering. YOU deserve it!

Signing out, till the next time yours in Service
