Microcurrent: The Natural Facelift

The day I turned thirty, I woke up excited in my hotel room with the promise of a French 75 and the cajun breakfast that was awaiting me as I was celebrating my most illustrious birthday in the Big Easy. Favorite cleanser in hand I gazed into the fluorescent lit bathroom mirror ready to primp myself for the day’s festivities. And then I saw it, like a sci fi monster creeping out of the depths, it was smile lines. Those starkly defined and painfully dreaded wrinkles that were etched around my nose and mouth.

  1. Was. Devastated.

Had I smiled to much in my thirty years? Surely I drank enough water. Exfoliation? It had to be exfoliation. Time to scrub my face like I never had before.

But the simple fact is, the human face is constructed of 45 muscles, 36 of which are used for expression alone. And unlike anywhere else on the body, those muscles directly relate to the appearance of our skin. Right at the tender age of 30, our muscle function begins to atrophy. As this deterioration begins to occur, we simultaneously lose collagen and elastin in our skin.  Science calls this, “Sarcopenia.” I call it, “Gravity is making my face melt and it’s not fair.” I refused to let my cheeks go down without a fight, so what’s a girl to do? Microcurrent my darling.

Microcurrent is a rejuvenating, low-level electrotherapy facial. Two prongs are used by an Esthetician to strategically strengthen the facial muscles, reeducating them into a sculpted and visibly tighter position. It’s Pilates for your face. During the facial, you’ll experience the tingling sensation of small electrical impulses. These impulses mimic those naturally occurring in our body. Aside from the improvement in muscle tone, microcurrent therapy triggers a boost in the body’s production of collagen and elastin. Those precious youthful proteins.

Immediately after the facial, the results are visible. The face is lifted, firm and beautifully hydrated. Treatment is typically done over several sessions, comparable to our gym routines for the rest of our body. Microcurrent is completely safe and FDA approved, however for some clients it’s not the best option.  I wouldn’t recommend this treatment for any of my pregnant guest, people with heart conditions or epilepsy.

  • Did you know that water is the best beauty treatment of all time for both men and woman??
  • You can tell which side of a person’s face they sleep on?  Just look closely at their eyelashes.  The outer corner portion of the eyelashes will be bent and sort of smashed looking (if you will).  Whichever eye’s lashes display this is the side of the face in which they sleep on.  Just don’t tell them that’s how you know
  • Sugar breaks down collagen and elastin which can cause wrinkles. So too much chocolate doesn’t give you pimples, it can give you wrinkles!
  • When your hair is wet it is as strong as aluminum. It can hold one third of its weight in absorbed moisture, and can be stretched as much as one and a half times its original length.
  • A human can shed 10 billion dead skin cells. This is approx. 2 kilos per year. Dust is made up mostly of dead skin. This is more than enough reason to exfoliate everyday!
  • A human body has a square inch of 19 million skin cells! We must feed these cells with vital nutrients, hydration and goodness everyday.
  • The skin is our largest organ and has a major role in our body such as protecting the skin from infections. Most of the things we apply to our skin go directly into our bloodstream. Lavender essential oil has been show in our kidneys only hours after applied to the skin.
  • Damage to our skin is 90% made up from ultraviolet rays. Half of this damage occurs before the age of 20. Sun damage can lead to premature aging, wrinkling, rough, saggy skin, and discolored skin and skin cancer.
  • Going to bed with your makeup on can age your skin up to 7 times faster. You must remove makeup before going to sleep and let your skin breath and repair while you sleep!
  • The skin starts aging when the cells die off faster than the body can replace them. Sickness, stress, anxiety and depression also add to the aging of the skin. Keep your skin young by feeding your cells nutrients, minerals, water, and goodness every single day!
  • Exercise can combat wrinkles. The boost in blood circulation to the skin strengthens blood vessels and increases the renewal of cells.
  • Toothpastes that contain menthol can work to reduce redness and extract impurities from your skin such as pimples. But it can also dry your skin slightly so don’t go overboard with your application! Next time you have  a dark red pimple apply toothpaste. I have heard of celebrities doing this…
  •  Did you know to help make any lipstick last longer. You can separate a tissue by making it one ply and placing it over your lips (once you’ve applied your application of lipstick) and dip your powder brush into loose powder, it can be face powder or even baby powder and dab it over the tissue making sure to cover entire lip area.  This will “set” your lipstick.

Top O’ the Morning Muffins
Servings: 12 large muffins

3 cups whole wheat flour (or flour of your choice)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
2 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
3/4-1 cup Vanilla Nutrimeal (depending on taste)
3 eggs
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup apple sauce
1 cup stevia for baking (or sugar of your choice)
3 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups grated zucchini
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup raisins
(Optional, if you’re feeling decadent) 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, or try carob chips

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 350º
  2. Sift together flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and Nutrimeal
  3. Beat eggs, then mix in oil, apple sauce, sugar, vanilla and grated zucchini
  4. Mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients; then fold in nuts, raisins and chocolate/carob chips, if desired
  5. Fill lightly greased muffin pans (for 12 large muffins)
  6. Bake 25-30 minutes; remove from pan and allow to cook on baking rack

With clients that come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, I have had the opportunity to pick the brains of hundreds of women on what their definition of  GOOD HAIR is.  The final conclusion? Everyone wants/loves what they don’t have! If its curly, they want straight.  Thick or thin? Fine or coarse? It doesn’t matter what the texture or style is, most women desire the opposite.  As stylists, we see the beauty and potential in ANY head of hair and often encourage to embrace what you’ve been given (for the most part).  What do you think ladies?

Get Rid of That UNHEALTHY Belly Fat!

I draw mostly from personal experiences and this is currently where im focusing my energy.. get fit and fab girls! Not just to look good, but to feel healthy, energized, and refreshed! Happy workouts!….

Belly fat has been shown to be just about the most harmful form of surplus fat that exists. Medical professionals all over the world are not really sure exactly why, but this type of fat has been linked to a variety of adverse health conditions.

It is no wonder then why so many of us are so keen to get rid of our belly fat. If you think that you have recently grown a little thick around the middle and would like to ust do something about it, here are three types of great routines to help you. If your need some motivation to help you realize that you need to start, know that reducing your belly fat also reduces the health threats associated with heart problems.

Here are the three (3) types of workout regimens:

· Cardio

· Core Strength, and

· Yoga

Cardio:Cardiovascular exercises will allow you to shed weight throughout the whole body. This is great since, to get rid of the fat around the belly, you need to get rid of it from just about everywhere. Generally, our bodies have a tendency to store excess fat in particular areas, largely because of our genetic makeup. Cardio routines would help reduce your body to fat percentage, which would surely help you become far healthier as well as provide you with the toned tummy that you have always desired.

The most effective cardio exercises are simply the ones that you are going to follow until you achieve the desired results. You can choose a handful of diverse routines that you take pleasure in performing, and strive to perform them for a minimum of a few hours every week.

You don’t necessarily have to be “professional” about doing these exercises, though. Some simply, everyday responsibilities can be utilized to achieve your goals. For example:

· If you happen to be interested in do-it-yourself activities, you could occupy yourself with some garage and yard projects.

· If you are fortunate to be a parent or guardian, have fun with your children in the playground, or even carry them for leisurely strolls along nature’s hiking trails.

· For those who have a dog, carry it for walks or to play “go fetch” to achieve a good workout.

· Should you favor a more sociable setting, you could become a member of some sort of group training class at your neighborhood health club, or even at an entertainment center.

Core Strength:
 

 

Different versions of these types of workouts will allow you to trim your waistline quicker. For instance, instead of performing the typical crunches, you could do up and down crunches. These are generally done resting on your back with each of your legs kept at about a 45 degree angle off the floor.

Performing leg lifts, as well as crunches, with the aid of an exercise ball will significantly improve your core strength. With exercise balls you need to be able to maintain your balance. This will usually encourage each of your primary muscle groups to become active. You would do well to remember though, when performing these routines, to engage the back muscle groups also so that some muscle proportion could be achieved.

Yoga:
 

 

As far as effective stress management and core strength development is concerned, it’s tough to outdo yoga in terms of results. It is effective in reducing the manufacture of stress hormones, as well as in the toning of your stomach muscles. This makes it an exceptional routine to help get rid of belly fat.

As long as our body system is stressed, it will react by trying to protect itself. This tenseness is usually caused by mental or emotional anxiety, sickness, trauma, or even the abuse of stimulant drugs. Yoga offers breathing as well as stretching routines which reduce muscle stress. It also concentrates on calm, flowing movements, thus helping to soothe the mind, reduce the heart rate, and, ultimately, reduce hypertension.

Several yoga positions are extremely effective for firming the stomach. What’s great about these postures is that they come in a variety of supine, sitting and standing up positions that encourage you to stretch your legs as well as preserve stability.

All in all, by using a consistent program involving cardio, core strengthening, and yoga, you can expect to remove significant amounts of inches from your midsection. This ultimately will result in improved overall health with the added bonus of general peacefulness.
